Updates

Have you heard? Forecasts, including NOAA’s ENSO Probabilities report, are calling for a move to La Niña this summer and into the fall. La Niña conditions typically indicate warmer, dryer summer weather. They can also mean a more active Atlantic tropical season. Sea surface temperatures in the eastern and central Atlantic are currently at record warm levels and are expected to remain well above average for the upcoming hurricane season. A warmer-than-normal Atlantic provides a more conducive environment for hurricane formation and intensification.

Fun fact for callout on this page

According to NOAA and the National Weather Service, on average, 12 tropical storms — six of which become hurricanes — form over the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, or Gulf of Mexico during the hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30 each year.
